The Costa Calida/Murcia region

The Costa Calida stretches 250km from the beach at El Mojon, to La Carolina beach in Aguilas, and is shared by two seas - Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. Spain's "warm coast", with over 320 days of sunshine per year. It's warm temperature (annual average 21 degees centigrade) and low rainfall, makes it suitable for holidays all year round.

The province of Murcia lies south of Alicante and stretches inland to Albacete and south to Almeria.

Murcia, the capital, stands on the banks of the River Segura,a modern city which conserves its traditional roots, with its impressive architecture and baroque art.

There is so much to see and all of it is within easy walking distance, you can wander at leisure around the pedestrianised maze of narrow streets and squares, shops, parks and museums. Places of interest include: Catedral de Santa Maria, with its great tower and north facade of the cathedral. 19th Century Casino which has provided the venue for many social events. Museo Arqueologico (archaeological Museum) traces the areas history and Centro Regional De Artesania (regional Crafts centre).

Mar menor is a huge salt water lagoon-separated from the Mediterranean by the La Manga strip. The waters of Mar Menor are a maximum depth of seven metres, and are warm throughout the year.

La Manga - The strip of land separating the warmer waters of the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean is 21 kilometers long and between 500 and 1200 metres wide, with beaches on both sides, pure crystal waters is a solid strip of hotels, shops restaurant, bars, golf and a great setting for sailing and diving.

Cartagena

Surrounded by five hills, Cartagena is a historic Roman town and natural port.

Places to visit include the Museo Arqueologico Municipal and Museo Nacional de Arqueologia Maritima - with many underwater shipwreck finds.

The old town is enclosed by a wall with 8 gates 'Muralla del Mar' has wonderful old fashioned shops, bars and restaurants.

Beaches and water sports

Costa Calida has outstanding beaches, many have been awarded the Blue Flag. With soft sand and glassy-clear water, coupled with the warm waters from the Mar Menor - the salinity provides buoyancy, so is said to be one of the safest places to swim, ideal for children and for the extensive water sports that are on offer in this area.

A wide range of natural parks can be found in the Murcia area

Sierra Espuna, one of Spains renowned natural parks, a wilderness area of dramatic peaks and pine forests, with an abundance of wildlife and birds to discover- offering scenic drives, climbing, cycling and walking.

Other local natural parks include El Valle Natural Park and Guardamar National Park.

The cities of Murcis and Cartagena both have excellent shopping facilities

Nueva Condimina- a recently opened shopping mall with over 200 shops, restaurants, 10 pin bowling and cinema, this is located just 20 minutes towards Murcia.
